‘If that ain’t a symbol of 2020.’ Storm rips tallest and largest free-flying US flag

The largest and tallest American flag in the world was ripped apart in a nighttime storm.

It led many to see it as a symbol of a tumultuous 2020 in the U.S.

A photo shows the torn flag billowing during violent thunderstorms in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on Tuesday. The massive 70-foot by 140-foot flag flew atop a 400-foot flagpole at Acuity Insurance, which honors local residents killed in active duty with a memorial at the base.

Anastasia Hicks, who lives near the company, took the photo and posted it on Facebook.

“Torn apart by a storm,” Hicks posted. “If that ain’t a symbol of 2020 for ya.... sad.”

The death of George Floyd while in Minneapolis law enforcement custody has stirred anger and nationwide protests, reigniting a call for action on police brutality against blacks.

Meanwhile, the coronavirus pandemic continues to take lives, with more than 100,000 deaths in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins University.

In a Facebook post, Acuity Insurance says it took down the tattered flag.

“We have flags to replace damaged ones as needed,” the company said. “We are very proud to host the largest symbol of freedom, as well as a veterans memorial.”

The company tweeted a photo of the new flag flying in clear skies on Wednesday morning.
