4 grenades turn up in parking lot near McDonald’s — and 3 were live, Oregon cops say
A landscaper working in southern Oregon stumbled upon what he thought was a grenade on Tuesday, and then authorities discovered three more — and three of the four grenades were live explosives, according to police.
Stephen Rodgers of Monument Landscape Services said he was clearing blackberry bushes at a parking lot near a McDonald’s in Grants Pass on Tuesday morning when he found what he thought was an unexploded grenade, KTVL reports. An explosive technician who responded discovered three more.
Oregon State Police secured the devices and the street nearby was reopened, local authorities said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon. Earlier in the day, the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety asked people to avoid the area near the parking lot where the explosive was reported.
Grants Pass police announced Thursday that inspections revealed “three of the four devices were live.”
The National Guard was called in from Portland “to do a secondary sweep of the lot where the grenades were located on Tuesday,” police said in a Facebook post Thursday.
“The lot was checked and thankfully there were no additional items of concern located,” police said.
The spot where the grenades were discovered is near a Chevron gas station and a cannabis shop, according to KDRV.
