DALLAS – The rifle used in a deadly 1966 sniper rampage at the University of Texas is being sold at auction.

Bids are starting at $25,000 for the rifle used by Charles Whitman during the attack from atop the clock tower that that killed 16 people and wounded dozens more.

The bids are being accepted on the website of Texas Gun Trader.

Donald Weiss of Dallas tells the Houston Chronicle he’s helping the owner of the Remington 700 sell the weapon. Weiss says the owner obtained the rifle from Whitman’s estate.

Weiss says there’s a pending offer of more than $25,000 from Southeast Texas.

Police who made their way to the top of the tower shot and killed Whitman after the former Marine spent more than an hour firing on people.
