The Unified Government Board of Commissioners will soon vote on whether to name local baseball park in memory of Elijah Ming, a Wyandotte County sheriff’s deputy who died in the line of duty last summer.

By a unanimous vote, the Wyandotte County Park Board this week approved Mayor Tyrone Garner’s administration’s recommendation to name Heathwood Park baseball field in Ming’s honor. The item is slated for final approval on the board of commissioners’ Nov. 20 agenda, according to the parks and recreation department. The park is located at the corner of Tenth Street and Parallel Parkway in northeast Wyandotte.

Ming was among three law enforcement officers to be named Officer of the Year on Thursday evening at the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association Awards for Valor. He was joined by the late Hunter Simoncic, a KCK police officer who also died in the line of duty in August, and Jared Timbrook, a Lee’s Summit Police Department Officer who was shot while on duty in June and survived.

Laura Bauer, PJ Green and Caroline Zimmerman contributed to this report.
