What’s next for wire fraud case against 2 Wyandotte County court bookkeepers
A federal case against two Wyandotte County District Court bookkeepers who are accused of stealing at least $900,000 in public funds is ongoing. Defendants Julia Roberts of Kansas City, Kansas and Vicki Robinson of Bonner Springs are due in court this December, Senior Judge Daniel D. Crabtree decided in a Tuesday morning hearing.
Roberts appeared in court for the case’s first pre-trial hearing. Robinson did not appear but was represented by her attorney. The former state employees’ attorneys requested additional time to review case evidence recently submitted by federal prosecutors. Crabtree approved that request and scheduled involved parties for a 10 a.m. Dec. 9 hearing.
The federal government in late August accused Roberts and Robinson of conducting a wire fraud scheme that netted them almost $1 million in state court funds. They were also accused of committing identity theft by allegedly writing and depositing forged checks into a local bank in order to hide that they were pocketing incoming cash payments made to the court, according to the indictment against them.
Their scheme went on over the course of five years, between 2018 and 2023, according to their indictment. They appeared in court in early September, where they each pleaded “not guilty.”
