Gov. Jay Nixon’s father, Jerry, has died, the governor’s office said Friday. Jerry Nixon was 90 years old.
“My father was driven by a commitment to leave his community better than he found it, and that’s exactly what he did,” Nixon said in a statement provided by the office. “I will remember him most for his quick wit and sense of adventure — and the joy he took in casting a line into a cold Ozarks stream. I will miss him deeply and be forever grateful for the example he set.”
The elder Nixon was a military veteran of both World War II and Korea, the office said. He had careers in public service and private sector, including service as the mayor of De Soto, Mo., where services will be held.
Both Nixons had the same first name — Jeremiah. The governor, of course, uses “Jay” as his common name.
