Gov. Jay Nixon has asked the state’s highway commission to analyze the use of tolls on I-70, including the possible collection of tolls by private firms who would upgrade the roadway.
“States have used private sector-based solutions, such as those involving tolls or public-private partnerships, to address significant transportation needs like I-70,” he wrote. “The potential of such solutions is worthy of exploration.”
Turning I-70 into a toll road would potentially free up highway funds for other parts of the state. Of course, it would also mean travelers from Kansas City to St. Louis and points in between would be paying gas taxes and tolls.
The Missouri Democrat says he wants the analysis by the end of the year.
