TheChat: Emanuel Cleaver exults over federal housing grant for KC

Good morning.

▪ “I am thrilled.” — Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver announcing a $30 million federal housing grant for Kansas City.

The money comes to Kansas City under the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Implementation Grant aimed at supporting local initiatives to address struggling neighborhoods. The money will go to the Paseo Gateway neighborhood just east of Downtown that serves as an entrance to the Historic Northeast area.

▪ “It'll grow the American economy at a level that it hasn't seen for decades.” — Donald Trump outlining his tax proposal Monday.

Trump’s plan would cut taxes for millions of Americans — both rich and poor. Among the biggest beneficiaries are individuals making less than $25,000 a year, who would pay no income taxes.

▪ “They don’t know him yet. And you’ve got a right wing of the party that is almost determined not to get to know him.” — Republican strategist Henry Barbour on one struggle facing Republican Jeb Bush.

Bush has to begin turning his campaign around or top donors are threatening mass defection.

▪ “Frankly I don’t always agree with everything the preacher says at church, either, but that doesn’t mean I’m not respectful.” — Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt Blunt on disagreeing with Pope Francis over the Iranian nuclear deal.

Blunt, a Republican, also said he wonders what impact the pope’s visit to the U.S. had on a man who was raised in Juan Peron’s Argentina. (Link via johncombest.com).
