City says Citadel ground less contaminated than feared
project in east Kansas City may be getting a bit of a break.
City officials said Thursday that recent tests of the soil reveal less asbestos contamination than originally feared.
“After surface soil testing and preliminary excavations, only two samples showed any trace of asbestos, far less than originally estimated,” the city’s press release says.
That could reduce the cost of clean-up on the plot of ground near 63rd and Prospect.
And that, in turn, could speed up development of the property.
We’ll see. The Citadel plan has been on the drawing board for two decades.
Asbestos is in the soil because homes on the property were improperly demolished to make way for the development.
