BuzzChatter Tuesday: John Kerry can be a pretty funny guy
Top o’ the day to you.
• “No one was harder to follow than Hillary Clinton. Not since J. Edgar Hoover has a presidential appointee left such high heels to fill.” — Secretary of State John Kerry at Saturday’s annual Gridiron Dinner in Washington.
Kerry’s line made Politico’s top 10 best quips of the evening. Kerry also delivered this winner: “Al Hunt asked me if I was nervous about tonight. I said, ‘Hell, no. If my jokes bomb, the Gridiron Veterans for Truth will just tell the world that I was never here.”• “I do not like this Uncle Sam. I do not like this health care scam. I do not like these dirty crooks or how they lie and cook the books.” — Sarah Palin on the final day of the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland mimicking Dr. Seuss’
Green Eggs and Ham.
Palin appeared to relish her chance to skewer the Obama administration and particularly the Affordable Care Act. She referred to the large number of young people in the audience as “Obamacare suckers.”• “Bob Dole is such a man of honor and integrity and principle. I hope that Ted Cruz will apologize to Bob Dole because that’s, that has crossed a line that, to me, is — leaves the realm of politics and discourse that we should have in America.” — Arizona Sen. John McCain criticizing remarks the Texas senator made at CPAC Thursday in which Cruz referred to “President Romney,” “President McCain” and “President Dole.”
For the record, Cruz refused to apologize. A spokesman said Cruz remarked in his speech that he still had great respect for the three. This is yet another example of how roundly disliked Cruz is within his own party.• “We’re going to sweep. The Democrats are going to sweep state offices.” — Kansas Democrat Jean Schodorf, her party’s candidate for secretary of state,
at the Democrats’ annual gathering
this weekend.
Hyperbole? Over-the-top enthusiasm? Yes and yes. But the attitude is indicative of just how confident Democrats are in the early stages of 2014. And yet, Democrats, including Paul Davis, the party’s gubernatorial nominee, have lots of questions to answer, including what he’ll do with the Brownback tax cuts. Will he wipe them out and run for office as a tax raiser like Walter Mondale once did? Will he say he’ll keep them in place, which would violate Democratic dogma? There’s a lot of campaigning left to be done between now and November. This story was originally published March 11, 2014 at 6:00 AM with the headline "BuzzChatter Tuesday: John Kerry can be a pretty funny guy."
