by 11 points, 42 percent to 31 percent, in Kansas.

The poll, provided to the Buzz, was conducted by phone Jan. 29. The firm is generally known for its work with Republican candidates.

The poll also shows Brownback with a 45 percent favorable rating, compared to 41 percent unfavorable.

While the poll shows Brownback with a lead, the poll should also provide some encouragement for Democrats.

The typical standard for an incumbent in a poll is 50 percent — the theory is most voters have already made a judgment about an officeholder. Anything under 50 percent suggests some weakness in the candidate.

Brownback is far below 50 percent.

At the same time, the last public poll showed Davis leading. This suggests a stronger Brownback than that poll.
