KCI petition group rejects council compromise

The group behind the petition seeking a public vote on any airport changes says a compromise offered by the city council isn’t good enough.

In a release,

said the committee will insist on its language, which, if passed by voters, would require another election on any changes at any Kansas City airport, including KCI.

“We stand behind the initiative petition signed by over 5,000 Kansas Citians and pursuant to the City Charter; we require our proposed ordinance in its original form to be submitted to the voters,” the statement says.

“We fully expect the City Council to obey our lawful demand, as required, and place our proposed ordinance on the April 8, 2014, ballot.”

The deadline for putting something on the April ballot has passed. That means the council would have to go to court to add the petition, or schedule a later election.
