James supports “elements” of school reform plan

“We need to look at how we can re-envision the educational landscape to replicate current success stories and bring more of the best teaching minds to our City,” James’ statement said. “I do not believe that equates to the state micromanaging our local classrooms, bold actions without accountability, or shipping students from the urban core to the suburbs with the expectation that they will succeed academically, socially, or emotionally.”

The state-sponsored study, released yesterday, suggested a transition to a non-profit model for Kansas City, Mo. schools — there would still be an overarching central office, but school buildings would be run by other districts or non-profits.

In an email, the mayor’s office said he was not endorsing the specific study, but wants further exploration of some of the parts in it.
