An icon of Kansas politics is making his feelings known in the close race for a GOP-held congressional seat.

Bob Dole, the longtime U.S. senator from Kansas and 1996 GOP nominee for president, tweeted Wednesday that he is endorsing Steve Watkins in his bid for the U.S. House.

Watkins is facing Democrat Paul Davis in the race for the 2nd congressional district seat.

“I believe he will work hard for all of his constituents and protect our Kansas values,” Dole tweeted.

Watkins has faced questions about his credibility in the aftermath of a Star investigation last month that found he inflated his role as a defense contractor in the Middle East by telling voters he owned a company he built from scratch, when that was not the case.
