Greg Orman, the 2014 independent U.S. Senate candidate from Kansas, is out this weekend with a column in the Concord (New Hampshire) Monitor that answers the question:
Why no independent presidential candidates?
Orman of Johnson County puts the blame squarely on the presidential debates. The threshold for an independent to participate remains too high, he writes.
“The presidential debates are a singular and critical opportunity to address the vast majority of the American electorate at once,” Orman said. “Being cut out means you can’t possibly compete.”

One big question unanswered in the column: Will Orman himself run again for Senate in 2016? Republican incumbent Jerry Moran is expected to be on the ballot again.
