Broken lamps. Shouting matches. Whispered conversations between employees about the president’s girlfriend.

The White House during the Lewinsky scandal was a tense place to work.

Kate Andersen Brower, a former White House correspondent for Bloomberg News, chronicles it all in a new book, The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House out this week.

During that time, first lady Hillary Clinton was known to call Pastry Chief Roland Mesnier and ask for her favorite dessert, mocha cake.

“I made many, many mocha cakes. You better believe it,” he told Brower, chuckling.
