Carl Brewer wants to be governor of Kansas, but first he wants to conquer the World Series of Barbecue.

Brewer, a former Wichita mayor who is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor, will be competing in several categories in the American Royal’s World Series of Barbecue this weekend in Kansas City, Kan. Brewer has competed in barbecue competitions for several years and even sells his own line of barbecue sauce.

Brewer, who if elected would be the first African American governor of Kansas, also will be trying to spread awareness of his campaign.

“Carl will be available to talk about everything from school funding and economic development to how to smoke the perfect rack of ribs,” his campaign said in a news release.
