Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback sets date for State of the State address
Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback will give his annual State of the State speech on Jan. 10, the second day of the new legislative session.
He’ll speak in the Kansas House at 5 p.m. that day. There will also be a live-stream of the speech at www.governor.ks.gov.
The governor’s office made the announcement in a press release late Tuesday morning. Lawmakers return to Topeka on Jan. 9 to start the 2017 legislative session.
Legislators will likely have to quickly contend with a $348 million shortfall in the current fiscal year.
Brownback has said he won’t present a plan for how to solve the shortfall until lawmakers return in January.
There has also been talk that Brownback could leave Kansas for a spot in the administration of president-elect Donald Trump. The governor has said repeatedly for much of the last month that he would not comment on the matter.
