How important are the presidential debates?
We can debate that (little quip there), but a new poll released on the eve of the first presidential debate Monday night suggests they’re pretty dang important.
First, two-thirds of registered voters say they expect to watch it, according to a new Morning Consult poll released Sunday morning. And half of voters say they debates will be at least somewhat important in how they vote. About 25 percent said the debates will not be important.
Some 29 percent said they expect Donald Trump to win Monday night while 36 percent predicted that Hillary Clinton would.
TV viewership is expected to be at record levels.
Trump led Clinton by a single point (39-38 percent) in the survey with Libertarian Gary Johnson at 9 percent and Green Party contender Jill Stein at 4 percent.
About half of all voters said the two third-party nominees should be included in the debates.
