The Kansas City Star is looking for interns to work in its newsroom in spring and summer 2026.

The Star offers a robust paid internship program that includes positions covering a wide variety of responsibilities. These positions are primarily based at our newsroom in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Many current Star newsroom staff members started at the company as interns, and we’re proud to continue the tradition by welcoming you and other top students again this year.

Candidates should be college juniors, seniors or recent graduates. They should be able to spot a good story and report it using multiple formats. Video and social media skills are a plus.

In the past, this has included assignments in legislative, local government, breaking news, sports*, visual journalism and audience engagement. Please let us know your preferred reporting topic as well as any specialized expertise, such as data reporting or audience engagement.

We believe that our team is stronger when we include individuals with a variety of perspectives and experiences, and we encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

How to apply for The Star’s internship program

Please apply online through our job portal. Applications are due by Dec. 31, 2025.

Your application should include: a cover letter, resume and at least three samples of your best news-related work.

We have one application for multiple internship types. Please identify in your application which type of internship you are most interested in pursuing at The Star.

  • For visual journalist positions: Please include still photography and videography in your submitted work samples.
  • For audience positions: Please include writing or multimedia materials that show your ability to engage with audiences. This may include writing, social campaigns, vertical video, newsletters or other multimedia.

*PROSPECTIVE SPORTS INTERNS PLEASE NOTE: The Star’s sports interns are selected through a program with the Sports Journalism Institute. Please apply through their application to be considered.
