Update: We’ve extended the submission deadline until Friday, April 7.

Everyone has a story of how an educator made their days a little brighter.

Whether it’s the crossing guard who greeted groggy families each morning with smiles and waves or the math teacher who put in extra time to make sure you understood fractions, we’ve all had someone in our K-12 years who positively impacted our lives.

The Star wants to celebrate the K-12 educators, staffers and volunteers on both sides of the state line who have made a difference in your community. We’re introducing the Honor Roll, a bracket-style competition – like March Madness – where readers will vote for their favorite educators.

First, we’ll need some help from you. We need you to nominate a teacher, school staffer or educator who has made a difference in your life – or your child’s life.

With every submission, please include your nominee’s full name, job, where they work, a photo and 150 words or less about how what they did to make an impact.

To help you out, here’s an example nomination we made up:

Arlene B. Jones, guidance counselor, Freemont High, Anytown, Kansas: Ms. Jones goes above and beyond to make sure all students at Freemont High have success. She is dedicated to making sure no student falls through the cracks and every single child gets to shine. She is emblematic of what an educator should be — excellent in every way! The children at our school are lucky to have her.

Once we review your submissions, we’ll put together a bracket of the nominees. Then, you’ll have the chance to vote each week in a poll on kansascity.com.

As we approach the last stages, we’ll write stories or post videos about the remaining nominees before conducting a final poll to pick a winner.

And while this is a competition, we’re not trying to rank everyone’s good deeds. Instead, our hope is to celebrate educators and bolster pride in local school communities.

Send in your submissions using the form below by April 7.

We can’t wait to read them!

If the submission form isn’t appearing above, go here.
