Mizzou professor under investigation for mask remark to student from Wuhan, China

A University of Missouri professor came under fire on the first day of classes after allegedly making a remark to a student from Wuhan, China.

The student said they were from Wuhan, the city in central China where the novel coronavirus emerged late last year.

The professor said, “Let me put on my mask,” according to a social media post by another student.

The student posted that she thought the comment was xenophobic and unnecessary because the class was online.

MU spokesman Christian Basi said the university was aware of the incident and that the Office for Civil Rights & Title IX was investigating.

More classes are online this semester because of concerns about the spread of COVID-19. Classes began Monday with 51% face-to-face, 32.5% online only and 16.5% blended.

The university said 159 students have tested positive for the virus and are in isolation.
