Female inmates reportedly sexually assaulted at correctional center
Two women have reportedly been sexually assaulted by one or more male inmates at the Regional Correction Center in downtown Kansas City, Jackson County said in a release Sunday.
Staff at the correction center, which is operated by Jackson County, were notified Friday that the women had possibly been sexually assaulted.
The county said staff contacted Kansas City police and requested that they conduct an investigation, which is according to procedure.
The county said that the correction center’s staff is cooperating with the investigation and providing any assistance that is requested.
The corrections department also conducted an internal review relating to the incident.
Although no staff members have been accused of engaging in sexual contact with any inmates, one staff member has been suspended without pay for potentially violating policies and procedures, the county said in the release.
