Police investigate shooting of woman in Independence

Police were looking for a gunman who shot a woman in Independence early Thursday.

An officer found the woman about 1:40 a.m. lying in the road in the 600 block of North Hocker Street.

It was not known how many times she had been shot, but she was talking to officers before being taken to a hospital, said Officer Tom Gentry, an Independence police spokesman.

The extent of her injuries was not available.

Believing the gunman was still in the area, police set up a search area and went door-to-door talking with residents.

Police were unable to find the gunman and cleared the scene of the shooting about 6:30 a.m., Gentry said.

Police believe the gunman was an acquaintance of the victim, but they were unable to determine how she knew him. The shooting is not believed to be random.
