Man sentenced to prison for theft of charity bin in Leavenworth

A 50-year-old Douglas County man has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for stealing a Children’s Miracle Network donation bin from a Leavenworth store.

Michael Sterbach, of Baldwin City, was sentenced Friday in Leavenworth County District Court for the theft that occurred in October 2013.

According to prosecutors, Sterbach wheeled the bin out of a Wal-Mart in a shopping cart.

Sterbach later admitted that he had done the same thing in Overland Park, Excelsior Springs and Lee’s Summit.

He told investigators that he committed the thefts to support a drug habit, prosecutors said.

Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said the delay in sentencing was due to the other cases Sterbach had pending.

The bin stolen in Leavenworth contained an estimated $100, and the judge ordered that amount in restitution.
