Police search for suspects after at least three are injured in Lawrence shooting

Lawrence police continued to search Sunday night for two suspects in an afternoon shooting that injured three men.

The victims, all with possibly life-threatening injuries, were taken to Kansas City area hospitals, and one of the victims was taken by helicopter, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, public affairs officer. Police think the suspects and victims know one another.

“The victims will be our best witnesses, we believe,” McKinley said.

The shootings occurred in a residence in the 1600 block of West 19th Terrace, south of the University of Kansas campus and a few blocks from Schwegler Elementary School. KU issued a campus alert late in the afternoon.

The suspects fled on foot, and one was seen running toward campus, which was the reason for the KU alert, McKinley said.

Descriptions of the two males suspects by neighbors and others in the area were varied, he said. It’s believed they were wearing jeans and dark-colored sweatshirts. One suspect is white but the race of the other is unclear.
