Condolences poured in quickly over the death of KCK police Capt. Robert Melton in the line of duty on Tuesday.

Law enforcement agencies from across the country, local residents, sports figures, members of the media and Hollywood actors from Kansas and Missouri - including KCK native Eric Stonestreet and Kansas-born actress Kirstie Alley - posted messages of sympathy on social media.

Phoenix Suns coach Earl Watson, who graduated from Washington High School in 1997, whose brother was a retired police officer, posted a message on Facebook.

Grief and sadness was tinged with the anger and frustration over the death of a second officer in KCK in recent months.

People used words like “unfathomable,” “unreal,” and “unbelievable” to express their sympathies.

Enough is enough, many people wrote.

Police departments both close to home and from far away shared the grief.

One friend said good-bye to Melton on Facebook.

“Folks, please teach your kids that the police are the good guys,” pleaded one father on Facebook.
