Suspect in death of 3-year-old Amorian Hale admits guilt in federal gun case

A man charged in the 2015 killing of a 3-year-old Kansas City boy pleaded guilty Tuesday to illegally possessing a firearm.

Sulif I. Wilkins possessed a .40-caliber handgun on June 17, 2015, according to his plea in U.S. District Court in Kansas City. Because he is a convicted felon, it is illegal for him to possess a firearm.

According to court documents, Kansas City police were looking for Wilkins in connection with a homicide investigation when they caught him with the gun outside a southeast Kansas City apartment complex.

The 3-year-old boy, Amorian Hale, had been fatally shot several weeks before in a drive-by shooting.

In February, Jackson County prosecutors charged Wilkins, 26, with first-degree murder in the boy’s death. Two other men are also charged in the homicide.

The murder case is pending.

Wilkins, who has been in custody since his June 2015 arrest, will be sentenced later in the gun case.
