A 41-year-old man is facing a federal firearm charge after being delivered to a Kansas City police station while sleeping in the back of a car.

Steven McKay, a convicted felon, had a .40-caliber handgun tucked in his waistband when the driver left him at the East Patrol Division early Friday, according to charges filed Monday.

A woman told police that she stopped to offer McKay a ride when she saw him walking down Prospect Avenue with blood on his face. He asked the driver and her passenger to stop at a gas station. There, the woman told police, she noticed he was carrying a gun.

Once back in the car, McKay fell asleep. When they were unable to get him to leave the car, they drove to the police station.

Officers handcuffed McKay and took the gun from his waistband, according to court documents.

He told officers he couldn’t remember much about the previous hours but said he had used PCP and been injured in an altercation with a woman.

McKay has prior convictions for robbery and theft, according to the documents.
