Two women are accused of leaving baby alone in hot car in Kansas City
Child endangerment charges have been filed against two women who allegedly left an infant unattended inside a car while they shopped.
Jamila R. Scott, 21, of Lee’s Summit, and Jaylyn L. Lux, 24, of Kansas City, were charged with leaving the 9-month-old inside a vehicle last Thursday night in the 8600 block of East 63rd Trafficway.
According to court documents, a witness who saw the baby in the car noted that the outside temperature was 86 degrees. The witness later told police that the baby was sweating and there was no shade over the vehicle, which had a window opened about six inches.
The witness went into the store and told the manager about the baby.
“There’s a baby in the car and I’m calling the police,” the manager yelled out.
A store employee pointed out Scott and Lux and said, “That’s them right there,” according to the documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court.
The two women continued shopping, according to witnesses.
After an ambulance arrived, Scott went outside and told ambulance personnel that she was the baby’s aunt.
The child was taken to a hospital to be treated for dehydration and heat exhaustion, according to court documents.
Lux and Scott were arraigned Monday and remained jailed Tuesday morning.
