Gladstone man sentenced to prison in $15,000 counterfeiting case

A Gladstone man was sentenced Monday to four years and two months in prison for making and passing more than $15,000 in counterfeit money.

Robert Q. Liggans, 23, had pleaded guilty earlier this year in U.S. District Court in Kansas City to leading a conspiracy to manufacture phony $20 and $100 bills and use them to purchase items from various retailers.

Liggans admitted to passing counterfeit money on at least 33 occasions.

After making purchases, members of the conspiracy would return the items to stores to obtain cash or gift cards, according to prosecutors.

Liggans was released on bond after being charged last year but didn’t show up for his arraignment. He was arrested several months later after leading police in a high-speed chase in a stolen car.
