Guilty plea in Overland Park killing

A 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man admitted Tuesday that he shot a man to death in Overland Park last September.

Christopher Lamont Shelton-Jenkins pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to a charge of premeditated first-degree murder in the death of Brandon L. Holmes.

Holmes, 21, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the chest at his apartment in the 9100 block of Robinson Street.

According to a statement of facts read by Assistant District Attorney Keith Henderson, Holmes was a roommate of Shelton-Jenkins’ wife, who discovered his body after he was shot.

When questioned by police, Shelton-Jenkins said that he had wanted to kill Holmes and planned to do it but that someone else had beaten him to it, Henderson said.

Shelton-Jenkins later told detectives that he had set up the killing but was not the one who killed Holmes.

A gun matched by ballistics testing to bullets at the scene of the killing later was found hidden on property near the residence of Shelton-Jenkins’ family.

Sentencing for Shelton-Jenkins is scheduled for Oct. 3. He faces a sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
