Man is charged in KC after 35 pounds of cocaine are found on Greyhound bus

Federal charges have been filed against a Greyhound bus passenger arrested in Kansas City after police found nearly 35 pounds of cocaine in a suitcase.

Jose Manual Gomez-Monzon, 21, of Sinaloa, Mexico, was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court with possession with intent to distribute cocaine.

According to court documents, Kansas City police found the suitcase Tuesday on a bus that had arrived in Kansas City from Los Angeles. The suitcase emitted a strong chemical odor, according to the documents.

When no passengers claimed the bag, officers opened it. Under a thin layer of clothing they found 15 wrapped packages, each containing about a kilogram of cocaine.

Gomez-Monzon was “visibly nervous” when questioned by police and later told officers he had traveled from Mexico to Los Angeles, where he picked up a suitcase he was taking to Philadelphia, according to court documents.
