Auction site with KC area connection is involved in auction of gun that killed Trayvon Martin
A Kansas City area man helped create the website that George Zimmerman is using to sell the handgun used to kill Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
Todd Underwood said Tuesday he and others started the UnitedGunGroup.com site earlier this year to provide a forum for people to conduct legal, constitutionally protected business.
“It’s not about me,” Underwood said. “It’s not about my opinion.”
The site lists the opening price for the 9 mm handgun as $100,000.
As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, the site reflected 170 bids. The highest was $124,400.
Underwood said that the site has no part in the actual transaction or exchange of money. That would be between Zimmerman and the buyer. Underwood said the sale will be conducted by federally licensed firearm dealers.
Kevin Jamison, a local attorney and spokesman for the Western Missouri Shooters Alliance, said Tuesday that Underwood contacted him to make sure everything he was doing was legal.
Underwood said that if Zimmerman had been convicted of killing the teen, he would have nothing to do with the sale.
“That wouldn’t be lawful,” he said.
Jamison said Underwood and his wife have received online threats as a result of the auction.
“At first he was concerned, but he’s not going to allow people sitting around in their mother’s basement to deter him,” Jamison said.
Underwood said he has contacted the FBI about the threats.
