Man shot by Kansas City, Kan., police charged with assault
A Kansas City, Kan., man shot by police early Sunday after allegedly pointing a shotgun at officers has been charged with multiple counts of assault.
Thomas Lee Torrence was wounded in the leg early Sunday morning in the 8500 block of Troup Avenue.
Prosecutors charged Torrence, 38, on Monday in Wyandotte County District Court with seven counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and single counts of aggravated assault and criminal damage to property.
His bond was set at $50,000. Jail records show that Torrence remained hospitalized Monday afternoon.
Kansas City, Kan., police said officers were called about a reported disturbance about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. A witness at the scene said Torrence was inside the house breaking things.
Police went inside and talked to Torrence, but when they walked outside, he allegedly came to the front door carrying a shotgun. Police said he went back inside, returned to the front door and pointed a shotgun at officers, who then shot him.
