Former Missouri deputy admits to stealing public money
A former Missouri sheriff’s deputy pleaded guilty Monday to stealing public money.
Michael E. Mullaney, 54, of Lowry City, Mo., was a deputy with the St. Clair County sheriff’s office when he conspired to help a jail inmate illegally obtain unemployment benefits.
Mullaney pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court in Springfield.
The former inmate, William E. Parker, 54, of Fort Ritchie, Fla., formerly of Urich, Mo., pleaded guilty in February to wire fraud.
Prosecutors said the two men concocted the scheme after Parker was arrested in 2010 for burglary.
Mullaney assisted Parker in filing documents online to obtain about $5,300 in unemployment benefits he was not entitled to, according to prosecutors.
Sentencing dates for Mullaney and Parker have not been set.
