Smithville police warn motorists about man impersonating an officer

A Smithville woman alerted authorities after a man claiming to be a police officer pulled her over in a pickup truck.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. April 16 on U.S. 169, just south of Main Street. The woman said she was stopped by a man driving a gray Chevrolet or GMC pickup. He activated red and blue lights in the truck’s grill before ordering the woman to pull over.

She told police the man confronted her when she exited her vehicle. The man, who was not wearing a police uniform, accused her of tailgating and said he normally would have written her a ticket, said Kat Ford, a detective with the Smithville Police Department.

The woman immediately walked into a business at the strip mall and reported the incident. The man got into his pickup and drove away, Ford said.

He is described as a white male, between 50 and 60 years old with a medium build. He has a white and black full beard.

Investigators ask anyone who had a similar encounter to call the Smithville Police Department at 816-532-0500.
