KC couple is wounded in drive-by shooting in which police recover 60 shell casings

A Kansas City couple suffered gunshot wounds early Wednesday when gunmen peppered their residence with bullets in the 2800 block of Topping Avenue, police said.

Police recovered about 60 shell casings following the incident, which was reported about midnight. The male victim was shot in the back and his wife was grazed in the side.

Detectives working in the area heard numerous gunshots and responded to the residence. The couple had been sleeping in the southwest bedroom when the shooting occurred.

Investigators think the shots were fired from down the block on Bonita Street. Police found numerous bullet holes on the exterior of the residence.

“It was pretty clear from where the shots were coming from,” said Officer Darin Snapp, a police spokesman. “We don’t believe this was just some random shooting. A lot of times we will have shots go astray and go inside a residence.”

Investigators have not determined what prompted the shooting.

The male victim was taken to a hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition.

Police ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-8477.
