Rape, attempted murder defendant found dead in Johnson County jail
A man charged with rape and attempted murder was found dead in his cell Sunday morning at the Johnson County jail, the sheriff’s office said.
Gary Allen McCormick, 59, was found unresponsive during a routine check at 4:51 a.m. Detention center staff and medical staff attempted to resuscitate him and the Olathe Fire Department and Johnson County Med-Act were called but the efforts were unsuccessful, according to an announcement.
McCormick was alone in his cell. He was charged with rape, aggravated sodomy and attempted first-degree murder. Police said he beat his victim. His bond was $1 million. McCormick had a court scheduling date on May 18.
McCormick was arrested in July after he allegedly attacked a woman in the 10900 block of Richards Court in Lenexa, where he lived. Police tracked his cell phone to Kansas City, Kan., where they found his truck in the parking lot of the 7th Street Casino. He was also charged with attempting to flee and elude arrest.
