No one was injured after gunshots were fired Wednesday morning outside a Kansas City, Kan., elementary school.

One bullet struck Mark Twain Elementary School at 2300 Minnesota Ave., police said.

Police said a crew of school district employees and day laborers was working on landscaping outside the school when one of the temporary workers walked off after a verbal altercation.

A few minutes later, the crew heard gunshots and told police that they believed the worker who had walked off was shooting at them.

The alleged shooter fled the scene before police arrived.

As a precaution, officials said Mark Twain and nearby Wyandotte High School were placed on lockout, which means students were kept inside and nobody was allowed into the building. The lockout was lifted at noon, when students were released for the day.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-8477.
