Lee’s Summit police on Monday identified a man shot and killed Sunday by an officer as 34-year-old Jeffrey K. Lanahan.

Police said that a veteran officer shot Lanahan at the scene of a domestic disturbance after Lanahan charged at him while brandishing a “large knife.”

The shooting occurred about 12:40 p.m. Sunday in the 200 block of Northwest Hickory Street.

Lee’s Summit police said officers responded to a 911 call about an assault in progress.

The first officer on the scene, a 24-year department veteran, was waiting outside for backup when Lanahan charged at him and the officer shot Lanahan in the chest, according to police.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Police said a camera on the patrol car’s dashboard may have recorded the shooting, but the video has not been made public.
