A motorist who nearly hit a Kansas City police car head-on, then allegedly offered an officer $800 to let him go, is now facing a federal firearm charge.

Johnny L. Phillips, 34, is charged in U.S. District Court in Kansas City with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Earlier this month, two Kansas City officers were on patrol when an oncoming pickup truck forced them to take evasive action, according to court documents.

Police turned around and began following the truck, noting in reports that it was weaving on the roadway before they pulled it over.

Phillips was the only occupant, and officers saw a handgun on the passenger-side floorboard, according to the documents.

He allegedly offered the money to an officer before they conducted a field sobriety check, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Because he is a convicted felon, it is illegal for Phillips to possess a firearm.
