Independence man faces charges following long standoff

The Jackson County prosecutor has charged an 50-year-old Independence man in connection with a long standoff with police Sunday.

Darian L. Mickelson faces charges of unlawful possession of a weapon and third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer.

According to court documents:

Independence police and firefighters responded about 1 p.m. Sunday to a fire in the 3100 block of South Englewood Terrace. The residence had been flagged with an alert because Mickelson allegedly had made previous threats to commit “suicide by cop.”

Upon arrival, they found a shed on fire. A resident allegedly threatened that he had a fire bomb and yelled obscenities at the officers. The man also allegedly pointed a rifle at police, according to court documents.

After several hours, Mickelson surrendered to police. Police allegedly found an improvised explosive near the main door of the residence as well as two rifles in the house, according to court documents.
