Wreck ends police chase on southbound Bruce R. Watkins Drive
A carjacking suspect being chased by Kansas City police going south on Bruce R. Watkins Drive crashed into two other vehicles near the 63rd Street and Meyer Boulevard exits about 7:20 a.m. Thursday.
Police temporarily closed a southbound lane of Bruce R. Watkins Drive to clear debris and investigate.
The incident began after a man used a knife to force a driver out of a Saab convertible about 5 a.m. at Woodland and Independence avenues, police said.
An off-duty officer later spotted the car and tried to stop it, but the carjacker sped away.
Police chased it south from Linwood and Troost onto Bruce Watkins, 55th Street and back to Bruce Watkins. Police saw the carjacker smoking a cigarette during the pursuit, which involved moderate speeds, police said.
The chase ended when the car rear-ended the two vehicles. All three drivers were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries, said Sgt. Bill Mahoney of the department’s accident investigation unit.
