Man is accused of having sex with 14-year-old girl in abandoned Independence house
Independence police investigating suspicious activity at an abandoned house Monday discovered a 26-year-old man allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old girl.
On Tuesday, prosecutors charged Cory S. Ruhnke of Kansas City with attempted statutory sodomy and sexual misconduct involving a child younger than 15.
Officers were called just after noon Monday to the 10700 block of East 13th Street after someone reported seeing people going into the abandoned house, according to documents filed in Jackson County Circuit Court.
When two officers went inside, they found a male and female on a mattress, both naked from the waist down.
“The officers ordered the two people to stop what they were doing and get dressed,” according to the documents.
When they learned that the girl was 14, they arrested Ruhnke.
According to court records, Ruhnke was free on bond in a burglary case from Sugar Creek filed last summer.
His bond in the new case was set at $20,000.
