Trials set for brothers accused of killing Olathe rapper Jurl Carter
Separate trials were ordered Tuesday for two Kansas City brothers charged with killing a man last year outside an Overland Park bar.
James A. Willis, 28, and Dale M. Willis, 33, are charged in Johnson County District Court with first-degree murder in the shooting death last September of 24-year-old Olathe resident Jurl Carter, an aspiring rapper.
James Willis has to be tried by the end of April under the legal terms of his transfer to Johnson County from federal custody. He is serving a two-year sentence for violating the conditions of his parole in a felon in possession of a firearm case.
His attorney, Jason Billam, said Tuesday that James Willis wants his trial as soon as possible. It is set to begin on April 4.
Craig Divine, attorney for Dale Willis, who is not under the same time constraint, asked that the men be tried separately.
The trial for Dale Willis is scheduled for June 13.
Both men remain in custody.
