Counterfeit bills are passed at area garage sales
Criminals have been passing counterfeit money at area garage sales, Kansas City police said.
Since the middle of May, police have received reports of at least four people being victimized by the counterfeiters in Kansas City, North. The most recent incident happened last weekend.
The criminals use fake $100 and $20 bills to make small purchases and receive real money as change. In one case, the criminal asked the person having the garage sale to break a $100 bill. The victims discovered the crimes when they tried to deposit their garage sale earnings at banks.
Police recommend that people having garage sales don’t accept anything larger than a $20 bill. They also suggest buying special pens sold by office supply retailers that can detect counterfeit money.
