Clay County prosecutors charged a 40-year-old Kansas City man Sunday for allegedly carjacking a man who gave him a ride and then shooting at him before driving off with a female passenger.

Jamie Lloyd Hopkins faces kidnapping, robbery and armed criminal action charges in connection with the incident Saturday in Kansas City, North. Hopkins is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

The carjacked man identified Hopkins in a police photograph lineup, telling investigators, “That’s the ... that shot at me and took my truck.”

Court records gave the following account:

The victim told investigators he received a text message from a female friend who asked him to give her a ride. The victim replied that he would pick her up after he finish playing pool in Greeley, Kan.

While on his way, the victim received another text that asked if he was alone and said where to pick her up. The victim picked up the woman and a man later identified as Hopkins.

When they got to the 3000 block of Northeast 108th Street, Hopkins pulled out a blue colored revolver and told the victim to “stop the truck and now and get out.” Hopkins warned the victim, “If you don’t stop I’ll shoot.”

The man pulled over and got out. The woman also tried to get out but Hopkins ordered her back in. The men got into a tug of war over the woman. Hopkins fired a gunshot between the victim and the woman. He then told the female passenger to get back into the truck.

Hopkins fired a second shot when victim tried to jump into the truckbed. Hopkins then sped away with the female.

Hours later, Kansas City officers were sent to the 3700 block of Fremont Avenue to investigate a car stolen in Olathe. Police believe the same person stole the truck in Clay County.

Officers followed the vehicle. The pursuit reached speeds of 85 mph and continued into Independence. Police found the vehicle unoccupied in the 9300 block of Morrell Avenue and began searching for the driver. They spotted Hopkins running through a field and arrested him.
