A homeless man threw a brick that smashed the headlight of Kansas City police vehicle Sunday. He then told an officer he was cold and wanted to go to jail because he didn’t like the shelters.

Police arrested the man after the 12:30 p.m. incident in a parking lot at the Central Patrol Division, 1200 E. Linwood Blvd.

An officer was walking out of the lot when he saw the man walking up from Forest Avenue, according to a police report.

The officer asked the man how he was doing but got no reply. The man continued walking toward the police station and pulled a brick out of his coat just as the officer asked whether he needed help with something.

The man threw the brick into the vehicle’s passenger-side headlight. It broke the lens and scratched the car’s front bumper.

The man threw up his hands and said, “I give up.”

The officer ordered the man to get on the ground, which he did without hesitating. The man was handcuffed and taken to the Metro Patrol Division, where he was booked.

The man remained in custody Monday.
