Life sentence ordered in molestation of 8-year-old girl in Olathe

A 31-year-old Johnson County man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for sexually molesting an 8-year-old girl.

Robert Donovan Burton will have to serve 40 years before he can seek parole for the crime, which occurred at an Olathe home in late 2012 or early 2013.

It was Burton’s second conviction for a sex crime involving a child. In 2005, he pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to attempted rape of a child younger than 14.

That case involved a 12-year-old girl who later gave birth to a baby fathered by Burton, according to court documents.

In the most recent case, a Johnson County jury in August found Burton guilty of taking indecent liberties with a child.

The girl reported to authorities that Burton molested her after showing her pornographic videos on his cellphone. The incident occurred while the girl was spending the night at the home of a man who employed Burton and the victim’s mother as caregivers, according to documents.
